History Of Raleigh, NC
On December 31, 1792, the iconic city of Raleigh in North Carolina was created, and was made the capital of the state. It was named after a man who wanted to create an English colony in the area in the 1580’s, called Sir Walter Raleigh. The city known as one diverse in music and performing arts experiences with operas, is a home to the famous Shaw University located in Raleigh, which is the first Black University in the South.
The city of Bath was the capital of North Carolina, and the oldest town in the state from 1705 until 1722, before the city of Raleigh was founded. Joe Lane in December 1770, made a petition against the North Carolina General Assembly to create a new county, and this petition was successful. The bill to create Wake County was passed on January 5, 1771, in General Assembly.
From portions of Orange County, Cumberland County, and Johnston County, Wake County was formed, and it was named after the wife of Governor William Tryon, Margaret Wake Tryon. When the city of Raleigh was founded, it became the county seat of Wake County, and also the capital city of North Carolina.
Over the years, the city has undergone different transformations and development, and Raleigh Sports Association has contributed their own quota into the city’s growth. This group has helped promote sports in the area, and have succeeded in uniting residents the city together through sports.
